Duane E. McWaine, MD
A native of Oakland, California, Dr. McWaine attended Longfellow, Crocker Highlands, and King Estates public schools before graduating from CPS high school. After receiving his AB degree at Princeton University, he completed medical school at the University of Southern California, now called Keck school of medicine, and psychiatry residency at Harbor General / UCLA Medical Center. Dr. McWaine opened his psychiatric private practice in West Los Angeles in 1988, focusing on HIV / AIDS, mood disorders, and addressing stigma in the Persian communities in Southern California and abroad. During that time, he served as Medical Director at Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services while teaching in the department of Biobehavioral sciences at UCLA Medical School. Appointed by Governor Gray Davis and continuing under Governor Schwarzenegger, he served on California’s statewide Council on Mentally Ill Offenders, pursuing ongoing interests in the severely mentally ill, stigma reduction, and the intersection between the mental health and criminal justice systems. After spending four years in New Zealand and Samoa, Dr. McWaine returned to California, providing psychiatric care in inpatient and assertive outpatient psychiatric settings before joining Anthem Blue Cross in 2014. As medical director for Medi-Cal Behavioral Health at Anthem, Dr. McWaine worked with colleagues in physical health and provider communities to develop initiatives and build teams focused on physical health / behavioral health integration, substance use disorder treatment in the primary care setting, and transgender services. Currently, Duane provides consultation services to health plans, medical start-ups, pain management and transgender providers and PhARMa while caring for patients in acute psychiatric inpatient settings.
Patrick Krill, JD
Recognized globally as a leading authority on addiction, mental health, and well-being in the legal profession, Patrick R. Krill is an attorney, licensed and board-certified alcohol and drug counselor, author, advocate, and thought leader. The founder of Krill Strategies, Patrick serves as a trusted advisor to large and midsize law firms throughout North America and Europe, educating them about and helping them navigate addiction, mental health, and well-being issues on a daily basis. Patrick’s educational background includes a BA in Political Science and Government from American University; a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School; an L.L.M. in International Law from American University Washington College of Law; and a Master’s Degree in Addiction Counseling from the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction.
Laura Docter, PhD
Dr. Docter is an educator with over thirty years of experience in teaching, educational research, and teacher education. She received her BA in History and her MA in Education from Stanford University, and her PhD in Curriculum, Teaching, and Social Policy from Michigan State University. Her dissertation, Faithful Labor: The Lifework of Julia Anne King, 1838-1919, is a biography of a Michigan teacher. Laura has taught in urban, suburban, and rural; public and independent; elementary, middle, and high schools across the country. She was an Assistant Professor at the University of Puget Sound and a lecturer at The University of California-Santa Barbara. Until May, 2019, Dr. Docter served as the 6th Grade Dean and a teacher in the History and Social Sciences Department at Castilleja School in Palo Alto, California. She is now a global studies, psychology, and women’s studies teacher at the Hun School in Princeton, NJ. Laura has three children and is married to Cam Stout.
Elijah Thornburg
Eli graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Colorado College in 2020, where he studied Psychology, Philosophy, and Dance. In the 2020-2021 school year, he was the 8th Grade Resident Teacher at The Girls’ Middle School in Palo Alto, CA. He is now pursuing a Masters in Clinical Social Work. His primary area of interest within the world of mental health and illness is the well-being of LGBTQ+ youth — this interest is, in part, fueled by his own experience as a nonbinary transmasculine person. Eli has prior work experience as a peer tutor and learning assistant in Colorado College’s Writing Center and Quantitative Reasoning Center, as well as experience as a middle school girls’ soccer and basketball coach, a science camp assistant teacher, a wilderness camp counselor, and a swim instructor. He also is a public speaker, mostly to communities of parents and educators, about gender diversity, queer identities, and youth mental wellness.
Tom Henry
Tom is a philanthropic advisor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and has been a professional fundraiser for the past fifteen years. As a volunteer, Tom has served on the boards of the Family Center for Bipolar Disorder at Beth Israel Medical Center – New York, of the Gordie Foundation, and of the Children’s Radio Foundation, and is a current board member of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Foundation, as well as an advisor to Village Health Works. Married with three daughters, Tom is a graduate of Princeton University and the Harvard Graduate School of Design; he relaxes by cycling, endurance triathlons, and sailing.
Elizabeth Dumanian, MSW
Elizabeth is a Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of psychotherapy experience. She has a private practice in Menlo Park, CA; and serves as a consultant to the Peninsula Bridge program and Menlo School, in addition to providing consultation and supervision to other clinicians in private practice. Elizabeth received her BA from Stanford University and her MSW from the University of Chicago. In addition to her practice, Elizabeth is an active community volunteer and has served on the boards of Stanford University, Menlo School, The Children’s Health Council ,and The Haas Center for Public Service. Elizabeth and her husband have three children and enjoy hiking and traveling in their free time.
Michael Culver, JD
Michael has had a 30-year plus career as a legal and business leader. Until 2017, Michael served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Upwork, and Vice President and General Counsel at Elance. Michael is now General Counsel and Senior VP of Legal and Business Affairs at Snagajob in Washington, DC. Michael started his legal career as a corporate attorney at an international law firm. He has also led finance, accounting, and operations in both tech and manufacturing companies. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Aesec and the Advisory Board of Certus, and he was a member of the founding Board of Directors of Legal OnRamp which was eventually acquired by Elevate Services. Michael also served a term on the Board of Trustees of the Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake City, Utah. He received an A.B. in Economics in Public Affairs from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and received a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Michael enjoys skiing, golf, and tennis; and also enjoys going to the symphony and watching classic films.
